Nakameguro is the canal neighbourhood, a tree-lined stretch of the Meguro river that turns into a tunnel of cherry blossom for one week each spring and a calm ribbon of coffee roasters, izakaya and boutiques the rest of the year. It's low-rise, stylish and made for slow evenings by the water.
Getting to Nakameguro
Nakameguro Station is served by the Tokyu Toyoko line and the Tokyo Metro Hibiya line, which means direct trains from Shibuya (about 3 minutes) and from central Tokyo on the Hibiya line. The canal is a few minutes' walk from the station on either side.
Skip the blossom-week crush if you can and come at dusk in any other season, when the roasters are still open and the izakaya lamps reflect on the water. Walk the canal slowly, that's the whole point.
