How I use Akihabara
Beyond the anime megastores there's an older Akihabara: radio parts stalls under the tracks, retro game basements, a shrine that has watched over the electronics trade since before transistors. I route people through in the late afternoon, when the neon starts to win against the daylight.

Akihabara is Tokyo's electronics and otaku capital: multi-floor anime and manga stores, retro-game basements, figure and hobby shops, maid cafes, and the arcades stacked with claw machines and rhythm games. Under the train tracks an older Akihabara survives too, tiny stalls selling radio parts and components, a leftover of the district's post-war electronics-market roots.
Getting to Akihabara
Akihabara Station is served by the JR Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku and Chuo-Sobu lines, the Tokyo Metro Hibiya line, and the Tsukuba Express. From Tokyo Station it's about 4 minutes on the Yamanote line. The Electric Town exit drops you into the heart of the shops.
Go in the late afternoon, when the neon starts to win against the daylight. The big stores are worth the elevator ride floor by floor, but the character is under the tracks and in the side streets, the parts stalls and the retro-game basements.
