Airport to Tokyo, what I told every arriving guest
Arrival day sets the tone for the whole trip, so I never gave guests five options, I asked one question: which airport, and where is the hotel?
From Haneda, relax, you are practically in the city. Keikyu line to Shinagawa in about 15 minutes or the monorail to Hamamatsucho in about 20, both connect straight into the Yamanote loop. Landing late, a fixed-fare taxi to most central hotels will not ruin you, and after a 12-hour flight it can be the right call.
From Narita, east-side hotel (Ueno, Asakusa, Akihabara): the Keisei Skyliner, about 41 minutes to Ueno, comfortable, reserved seats, big luggage racks. Buy the ticket at the machine or online, tap your IC card for the connecting ride after.
From Narita, west-side hotel (Tokyo Station, Ginza, Shibuya, Shinjuku): the Narita Express, one seat from the terminal basement to the big hubs, roughly an hour to Tokyo Station, up to 85 minutes to Shinjuku. Reserved seating, dedicated luggage space with a lock cable.
The limousine bus is the sleeper pick for families, it loads your suitcases underneath and stops at major hotel front doors, no stairs, no transfers, just slower in traffic.
Whatever you ride, do two things at the airport first: set up your IC card, and pull cash from the 7-Eleven ATM in arrivals. Those two minutes save an hour of friction later, and the rest of this guide takes over from there.
What is the fastest way from Narita to central Tokyo?
The Skyliner to Ueno in about 41 minutes if your hotel is on the east side, or the Narita Express to Tokyo, Shibuya and Shinjuku in roughly 55 to 85 minutes for the west side. Both are reserved-seat, luggage-friendly trains.
What is the best way from Haneda into Tokyo?
Haneda is close, this is the easy airport. The monorail to Hamamatsucho in about 20 minutes or the Keikyu line to Shinagawa in about 15, both a few hundred yen, then a short hop to your hotel.
Is the airport limousine bus worth it?
With small kids, lots of luggage or a hotel it serves directly, yes, it swallows your bags and stops at the lobby door. In normal traffic it is slower than the trains, but zero transfers is worth a lot on arrival day.
How much is a taxi from Narita to Tokyo?
Roughly 20,000 to 30,000 yen, it is a long way. From Haneda it is far more reasonable, often 6,000 to 10,000 yen to central hotels at fixed rates. Late arrival at Haneda with two people and bags, the taxi is honestly fine.
